Work Coordinate Offset (G54)

Commonly used work coordinate offset.

Work Coordinate Offset (G54)

Definition

Commonly used work coordinate offset. It gives the program a stable work origin that is separate from machine zero.

Formula / Rule

  • G54 selects one work offset register so all programmed coordinates are referenced from that datum.
  • Keep probing results, setup sheets, and restart procedures aligned to the same offset number.

Typical Range

  • Use it for the primary setup datum, then move to G55 and above only when a separate work origin is required.

Shop-floor Scenarios

  • Confirm G54 in the safety line before the first move after setup.
  • Recheck offset values after probing, fixture replacement, or crash recovery.

Common Errors / Troubleshooting

  • If every feature shifts together, inspect the active work offset before editing geometry.
  • If only one machine is wrong, compare stored G54 values and probing macros.
