Machining Parameters 31 terms

Machining Parameters

Feed, speed, load, and removal behavior.

Acceleration

Rate of change of axis velocity.

Axial Engagement

Amount of axial tool engagement into the workpiece (often equivalent to depth of cut).

Chip Thickness

Chip thickness in the cutting direction.

Chip Width

Chip dimension in the width-of-cut direction.

Constant RPM

Spindle control mode that maintains fixed rotational speed.

Constant Surface Speed (CSS)

Spindle control mode that maintains constant surface speed.

Cutting Force

Resultant force acting on the tool during cutting.

Cutting Power

Power required to perform cutting.

Cutting Ratio

Ratio of chip thickness to uncut chip thickness.

Cutting Speed

Surface speed at the contact point between tool edge and workpiece.

Cutting Temperature

Temperature generated in the cutting zone.

Depth of Cut (ap)

Axial depth of cut.

Feed Hold (Spindle On)

State that pauses feed while spindle rotation is maintained.

Feed per Revolution

Feed distance per spindle revolution.

Feed per Tooth

Advance distance per tooth per revolution.

Feed Rate

The speed at which a cutting tool advances along the workpiece in CNC machining, typically measured in mm/min (millimeters per minute) or IPM (inches per minute).

Feedrate Override

Proportional adjustment of current feedrate.

Finishing Allowance

Material thickness reserved for final finishing.

Jerk

Rate of change of acceleration (affects motion smoothness).

Material Removal Rate

Volume of material removed per unit time.

Radial Engagement

Amount of radial tool engagement into the workpiece (often equivalent to width of cut).

Rapid Traverse Rate

Axis movement speed during rapid traverse.

Roughing Allowance

Material allowance reserved during rough machining.

Spindle Override

Proportional adjustment of current spindle speed.

Spindle Speed

The rotational speed of the machine spindle, measured in RPM (revolutions per minute). It determines how fast the cutting tool or workpiece rotates during machining.

Spindle Torque

Magnitude of spindle output torque.

Stock Allowance

Amount of material reserved for subsequent machining.

Surface Speed

Linear speed at the contact point in circular motion.

Tool Load

Monitored value of actual tool or spindle load.

True Position

Geometric tolerance that controls feature location relative to datums.

Width of Cut (ae)

Radial width of cut.
